Beginning with a critique of the sociology of policing, the authors next provide a detailed analysis of the ideas of "private" and "public" as used here, and highlight the boundaries between different forms of policing. Competing theoretical explanations for the growth of private policing are then considered using a wide array of data extracted from the first-ever survey of the private security sector in Britain. Importantly, this book also studies the local level. By way of a case study, the authors examine the full range of Britain's police-work bodies, including the public police force, investigatory and regulatory agencies attached to the national and local government, and private security organizations. Jones and Newburn effectively rethink the meaning of "policing" in our time.

This study examines the period that we still colloquially refer to as "the permissive age" - the 1960s. Perhaps more than any other period in our recent history, that decade has been the source of some apparently imperishable myths. "Permission and Regulation" attempts to separate the myths from the realities. It focuses upon a series of legislative changes that are commonly held to illustrate the permissive or liberal character of the era. These central case studies - of the law in relation to abortion, obscenity, homosexuality and prostitution - cast doubt on the view propounded by politicians and moralists that such changes indicated moral relaxation and increasing sexual licence. The book argues that the ideology of permissiveness requires close examination and analyzes the campaigns of Mary Whitehouse to try and pinpoint how this ideology was constructed, applied and challenged. This book reports the result of research carried out in a busy London police station on the role and impact of closed-circuit television (CCTV) in the management and surveillance of suspects - the most thorough example of the use of CCTV by the police in the world. It focuses on the use of CCTV in a very different environment to that in which its impact has previously been studied, and draws upon the analysis of CCTV footage, suspects' backgrounds and extensive interviewing of both police officers and suspects. The research is situated in the context of concerns about the human rights implications of the use of CCTV, and challenges criminological and social theory in its conceptualisation of the role of their police, their governance and the use of CCTV. It raises key questions about both the future of policing and the treatment of suspects in custody.
