First published in 1936, and now available in a centenary edition, this book was written by Nehru almost entirely in prison from June 1934 to February 1935. His account, though replete with autobiographical details, is much more than a personal document; in the words of Rabindranath Tagore, "Through all its details there runs a deep current of humanity which overpasses the tangles of facts and leads us to the person who is greater than his deeds, and truer than his surroundings."

On 2 September 1946, the Congress formed the Interim Government and Nehru was sworn in as Member in charge of External Affairs and Commonwealth Relations. He was also to serve as Vice-President of the Executive Council. With the assumption of office, a new phase in Nehru's life began; and the Second Series of the Selected Works concerns his activities from September 1946 to May 1964. This first volume covers the months from September 1946 to January 1947, which formed a period of intricate constitutional debate, intensified political activity, and mounting communal tension.

From February to May 1947, the months covered by this volume, internal dissensions continued as before. While the Muslim League condemned the Cabinet Mission plan as a failure, asked for the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly and persisted in its efforts to obtain a separate Pakistan, the Congress sought the removal of the League representatives from the Interim Government as the League had refused to participate in the Assembly. On the eve of the transfer of power, there were a myriad other problems: the control of communal feelings, the efficiency of the Congress organization, the future objectives of a free India, the role of the army, the framing of independent defence and foreign policies.

Written in the critical months following the partition of India in 1947, Nehru's fortnightly letters through December of 1949 throw new light on the way he faced the deepening crises of the period: the massacres, migrations, fragmentation of states, and the conflagrations in Junagadh, Kashmir, and Hyderabad.

Written by Nehru's official biographer, this volume of speeches, writings, letters and memoranda covers the eventful months from August 15, 1947, when India became a free country and Nehru was sworn in as the Prime Minister, to December 31, 1947, when India took the issue of Pakistan's aggression in Kashmir to the United Nations. During this period, Nehru laid down a secular path hoping to strengthen the country's unity, expedited the drafting of a new constitution, visualized social change through planned development, and projected a picture of what India might one day achieve and become.

Compiled by Nehru's official biographer, this volume of speeches, writings, letters and memoranda covers the period from January to early April 1948, a time when communal tensions in India reached unprecedented levels and culminated in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Volatile reactionary forces confronted Nehru both abroad and at home and he averted national disaster by ensuring the fair treatment of minorities and preventing war with Pakistan over Kashmir.

The second volume of Jawaharlal Nehru's Letters to the Chief Ministers covers the cornerstone period from January 1950, when the new constitution came into force and India became a republic, to May 1952, when the first general elections had just been held and new government members were sworn into office.

Letters to the Chief Ministers 1947-1964

The twelve weeks between April 7 and June 30 1948, covered in this volume, were marked by a change in the office of the Governor-General, the continuing quest for communal harmony and the attempt to nourish a feelin of responsibility for construcive nationhood in India. Among the many tasks confronting the country at the time were the rehabilitation of refugees, development of an industrial economy, integration of States and the preparation of the Constitution. Nehru believed that despite the country's problems, that one day India would tread the path of self-realization and greatness by acting according to Gandhian principles. He strove to improve India's relations with Pakistan, develop a foreign policy of non-alignment and build economic cooperation among Asian countries.

In this third volume, Nehru writes on a wide range of large and small concerns, including community development, land reform, administrative issues, non-alignment, relations with Korea and Pakistan, the development of the northeast frontier, and the link between domestic and foreign policy. Like its predecessors in the series, this book is an invaluable source on postwar Indian history.
