The Beautiful and the Damned looks for the first time at the broad social and cultural context for the development of portrait photography in the nineteenth century, showing how social and celebrity portraiture on the one hand, and scientific photography on the other, were different facets of the nineteenth-century fascination with classification and ordering. Between 1860 and 1900, editions of celebrity portraits, as well as the vogue for the carte de visite, fuelled the fashion for collecting and classifying photographs of the face. In an age of rapid industrialisation and the growth of the middle classes, the carte de visite became a means of conferring social status, and family albums - which often incorporated photographs of royalty and public figures - were used to position family members within society at large.

Published to mark the 150th anniversary of the invention of photography, this companion volume to "The National Portrait Gallery Collection" contains a selection of 150 photographs from the Gallery's collection. This comprehensive survey of British portrait photography features the work of 150 eminent photographers including Julia Margaret Cameron, Nadar, Man Ray, Bill Brandt, Edward Steichen and Helmut Newton. The selection contains photographs produced using a wide range of photographic processes, including daguerreotypes, salted paper prints, ambrotypes, platinum prints and stereo daguerreotypes all faithfully reproduced in colour according to their original appearance. There is an introductory essay on the origins and development of the Gallery's photographic collection, and short biographies of sitters and photographers. This accompanies an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in October 1989.
