Extending the work begun by the Late Captain H.T.A. Bosanquet in his book The Naval Officer's Sword (HMSO, 1955, now out of print), this new study is based on the sword collection, which includes dirks and cutlasses, in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. it is founded on much research, for while the Museum's collection has grown to more than four times the size of that available to Captain Bosanquet, many weapons outside it have also been examined. Foreign naval weapons are described in much greater detail than before. Photographs of some 150 swords, dirks and cutlasses illustrate the more important variations relating to each type, and each general group is drawn together to present a coherent story, with weapons placed in a personal historical context by the provision of brief biographical studies of those by whom they were used. This work also provides much further information about the British sword trade, with comments on the industry and an extensive list of makers and retailers.

In the age of sail, the boats carried by the men-of-war were an essential part of the ship's outfitting. They were necessary to move stores, act as the "engine" in confined waters, serve as amphibious raiders, and even to cruise independently as tenders to the mother ship. Over the centuries there have been many sizes, hull forms, and rigs employed, so the exact details proved a problem for model makers, marine artists, and builders of replicas. 
In 1974 the original edition of this book was published by the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, England. Still the only complete study of this neglected topic, the book has now been revised and expanded to include more illustrations. It covers the sizes and types of boats formally allocated, the methods of hoisting and stowing them aboard ship, and the design and construction of the boats themselves, as well as their fittings, rigs, and armament, including guns, howitzers, and Congreve rockets. Although primarily devoted to the age of sail, the book also covers the steamboats of the late nineteenth century. 
Ship modelers, historians of the sailing navy, and small-craft enthusiasts will welcome this new edition.

Trafalgar, the most famous and most strategically significant victory in the age of sail, was not an isolated event. Rather it was the culmination of a campaign that began as soon as war was resumed in May 1803 and aimed ultimately at the invasion of Great Britain. To this end Napoleon attempted by ruse and elaborately disguised manoeuvres to bring his scattered and blockaded squadrons together for long enough to give him command of the Channel, which he fondly believed was all that was necessary to ensure a successful landing.Therefore this period becomes a perfect demonstration of the workings of seapower and reveals that, however great a strategic genius on land, Napoleon never really grasped the principles of British maritime defence, gleaned as it was from over two hundred years' experience. This is not to say that the invasion threat was treated lightly, although some of the rumoured devices belong to the world of science fiction; on the other hand the anti-invasion operations included the first use of such futuristic weapons as torpedoes and rockets.
