Galveston

The Battle for Galveston 1862 The island city of Galveston, a vital port where blockade runners bring key supplies into the Confederacy from abroad, is suddenly occupied by the Union, blockaded by navy vessels, cut off from the Texas mainland by the enemy. Jamie Russell, an artillery officer in the Valverde Battery and veteran of battles in New Mexico, has a personal stake in the safety of the city--his sister Emma and their Aunt May are trapped there. But Jamie also has the ear of General Magruder in Houston. If the Confederate army can retake the harbor, it will be a powerful victory for the South, and will enable Jamie's family to flee to safer quarters. Setting his sights on the river in order to disrupt confederate supply routes as well as to gain a foothold in Texas, Banks orders a two-pronged attack on the soldiers holding the Red River. His plan moves one force of Union soldiers down from Arkansas while a fleet of ironclads and steamers makes its way up the river itself. The Confederates, meanwhile, have secretly beached the huge steamer New City Falls across the river, each end touching shore, so the ship forms an unmovable blockade. By digging canals to reroute the water from the river, the rebels make sure the Red is low when the union ships arrive. Unable to move forward or retreat through the shallow water, the union troops are helpless under the fire of the rebels, including the Valverde Battery.The Confederates seem to have won, but the Union soldiers aren't going to give up that easily. When the rebel commander falls to the federal artillery, and the Union begins to set up dams to divert water for an escape, it is the rebels who must fight to keep their heads above the water. But the Confederate forces on the Red River face a still rougher path. For the North has elsewhere begun to turn the tide of war, making the Valverde battery's future uncertain.

The Guns of Valverde: Far Western Civil War

The Battle of Valverde is over, and Jamie Russell, now a Confederate war hero, returns home to his family. Jamie's sister Emma has been shattered by the death of her true love at Valverde. Worried about their daughter, Jamie's parents convince him to escort Emma to Galveston. Emma will have a chance to escape her monotonous life on the ranch, become a lady, and perhaps leave the memory of death behind her. Jamie soon discovers that Galveston lacks the defenses it needs to ward off a Union naval attack. Troubled by leaving his sister and aunt in a place susceptible to Union takeover, Jamie returns to his unit and begs with Confederate officers to have Galveston's defenses strengthened. His pleas fall on deaf ears. Union warships arrive in Galveston Bay, taking it for the Federals and confirming Jamie's worst fears. Now Jamie must travel back to Galveston in a secret Confederate operation to reclaim the city and rescue his family.
