While visiting The Menil Collection, Vik Muniz, creator of what he calls "photographic delusions," happened upon the museum's exhibition planning room, which contains a small-scale model of galleries filled with tiny copies of artworks from the permanent collection--museum curators use these models in planning installations. Fascinated, Muniz took digital pictures of the maquettes and, for the exhibition Model Pictures, held at The Menil Collection in spring 2002, enlarged them to the scale of the original works of art that they represent. For the book Model Pictures, a conceptual extension of the exhibition, he shrinks his photographs of the maquettes to their miniature size, or 1:12 of the original artworks.

This new title presents, in its entirety, a new series of photographs by Vik Muniz, completed while he was artist-in-residence at the Frick Art &amp; Historical Center in Pittsburgh. Muniz used his inimitable photographic eye to capture Clayton--the historical home of 19th century American industrialist Henry Clay Frick--through the eyes of a child. Muniz uses a 19th century 8 x 10 inch view camera to record a fictional narrative, using a deliberately low point of view that immerses the viewer in the perspective of a child. The result is a series of ominous and intriguing images that approach history in an imaginative, non-linear fashion. The book "Clayton Days" also features an essay by renowned author and photography critic Andy Grundberg that places this new series within the context of Muniz's past production and within the tradition of contemporary photography, and an extended dialogue with Muniz conducted by Linda Benedict-Jones, executive director of the Silver Eye Center for Photography. "When a cousin of mine told me his seven-year old could paint a Picasso, I told him probably, but he couldn't do the back," writes Brazilian conceptual artist Vik Muniz about his Verso project. The series consists of obsessively faithful three-dimensional trompe l'oeil reproductions--using period hardware in a 1:1 scale--of the backs of such iconic works as Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," van Gogh's "Starry Night" and Seurat's "La Grande Jatte," including every scratch, scribble, label, trace of tape and faded pencil notation found on the original. For six years, Muniz worked in partnership with the curatorial and conservation departments of New York's MOMA and Guggenheim museums, the Art Institute of Chicago and a team of craftsman, artists, forgers and technicians to realize this project.
