Narayana Guru (1854-1928), a much-revered philosopher-saint of South India, revisualised the essential Upanisadic thought with a freshness of perspective. The Bhagavad Gita, in this commentary is realized as a philosophical treatise of universal significance, having a bearing on the personal existence of each of us, as it is inseparably one with the existence of the whole. Taking cognizance of the overall development of the thought in the text, it enunciates the first half as a visualization of the oneness of the total system of existence and life with one Absolute Reality; with the second half insightfully proclaiming the unity of every individual, while maintaining one's characteristics, with the Cosmic Form, the concrete version of the Absolute or Bhagavan. It elaborates how each of its chapters and even verses leads to the next one, all in line with the overall scheme of thought. Acknowledging Gita as a yoga-shastra (science of dialectics), it explicates how this methodological device strings together all the seemingly contradictory statements; revealing an ineffably uniting experience, befitting a scientifically and practically conceived non-dualism or advaita. Though written as a sort of varttika to Nataraja Guru's famous commentary on the Gita, this one is appreciable as an independent book, since it delves into the depth of each verse directly in the view of the core philosophical vision, the Gita intends to communicate.

Life's Pilgrimage Through the Gita

Chandogya is the most intriguing of all the Upanishads. It begins with directing the priests of a Soma-yaga to see the hidden wisdom-significance in what they perform and recite as a brute ritual. This sublimating of ritualism gradually leads us to perceiving the entire life system as a yaj¤a held in and performed by Brahman. The next step this perception leads us to is sarvam khalvidam brahma (everything here indeed is Brahman). Then the enquiry as to what this Brahman is, begins. The answer we arrive at is tat tvam asi (That thou art). Finally we realize atmaivedam sarvam (atma indeed is everything here, or myself indeed is everything here). From this self-identity with everything, with Brahman, we never return to our identity with individuated forms pertaining to the world of becoming. The present commentary explicates in a lucid way how thinking progresses in this Upanishad, along with unravelling its schematic, structural and dialectical intricacies, both subjective and objective, both universal and particular.

In his most important Sanskrit work Darsanamala, Narayana Guru adopts a hitherto uncharted method of viewing the non-dual Brahman from ten different philosophical vantage points and leaving the student-seeker to intuitively perceive on one's own the one ineffable Reality. The ancient Upaniùadic wisdom is thus condensed and restated by the Guru in terms comprehensible to the mind-set of the Age of Science.
