Many assume that modern works of art are easily preserved; that their whereabouts can be readily established, thanks to sophisticated documentation systems; and that, in general, they are not subject to loss or destruction. But many important works have disappeared over the last century in a variety of ways, including war, theft, natural catastrophe, and carelessness. Most significantly, loss itself has been a major theme within modern and contemporary art, with elements of transience central to the practice of many well-known figures. Georges Braque (1882-1963) was one of the most revered and influential artists of his generation. He became famous for his role as co-inventor, with Picasso, of Cubism before the First World War, whilst the 'classical' quality of his later works, with their highly structured compositions and sublimated emotion, led him to be seen as a quintessentially French artist. Braque made prints throughout his long career. He produced a small number of Cubist etchings and drypoints between 1908 and 1912. In the interwar years he made an important suite of etchings for a luxury edition of an ancient Greek text. It was only after the Second World War, however, that Braque began printmaking in earnest. Paris was then the international centre of fine art printing, and he was able to work with some of the best printers in the world. At the workshop of Fernand Mourlot, he made a series of Greek-inspired lithographs, along with such well-known still lifes as 'Teapot and Lemons' and 'Leaves, Colour, Light'. With the intaglio printer Aldo Crommelynck, he experimented with sugar-lift aquatint, producing images of great technical refinement. One of the first School of Paris artists to take up colour lithography after the war, Braque was recognised in his lifetime as not only a great painter but also as a major printmaker. This book reproduces a wide selection of Braque's prints drawn from the artist's own collection, and includes a number of rare, uneditioned works. It also features an essay on Braque's life and achievement as a printmaker by Jennifer Mundy, Assistant Keeper in the Modern Collection of the Tate Gallery.

Although Hans Hartung became known in the 1950s as a central figure in the French abstract art movement "Art informel". The origins of his mature style actually lie in his earliest works, notably his drawings and watercolours of the 1920s and 1930s. Hartung explored the expressive possibilities of gestural abstraction over the course of his long career, often basing his paintings on his sketch-like drawings. Making use of the extensive holdings of the Fondation Hans Hartung et Anna-Eva Bergman, this volume examines the artist's development and describes the life and vision of this artist of abstraction.

This book examines the work of Duchamp, Man Ray, and Picabia, three pioneering figures in the history of modernism. It explores the points of convergence and the parallels in their development throughout their careers. Central to this is their response to photography and film, and to the challenges posed to fine art by the development of mass production. Duchamp’s paintings of 191112 were influenced by the representation of movement in photography, while Picabia’s were shaped in part by the belief that the advent of the camera spelled the end of traditional painting. Man Ray used photography first to record his own art works and those of others, but soon saw in it a means of creating images of a status and inventiveness traditionally restricted to fine art. And, as this fully illustrated book shows, humor and eroticism were themes common to the work of all three artists.
