Beka Valentine's brother is worthless, no good scum, and she doesn't want anything to do with him. That is, until the day he shows up to tell her that he has found their long-lost mother. If he'd arrived at any other time, Beka's captain Dylan Hunt would have been all for letting her search for her past. Unfortunately for Beka, her brother's announcement comes at a time when the Andromeda Ascendant is deeply tangled in delicate negotiations between a group of Nietzcheans and the Human Interplanetary Alliance. The problem is that the HIA seems on the verge of allying with a group of religious fanatics obsessed with genetic purity. Things get rapidly worse for Dylan when Beka sneaks off to try to find her mother. As if that wasn't enough, the rest of his crew soon starts taking sides in the negotiations. Before he knows it, he's facing an explosive situation that could turn into a bloodbath. To complicate matters further, Beka's quest parallels one taken by her mother years ago, and if Dylan doesn't stop her, she just might unwittingly unleash a technology that could end all life in the universe.

Examining a range of styles from the gritty vernacular sensibility of Weegee (Arthur Fellig) to the glitzy theatricality of Annie Leibovitz, Morris takes a thoughtful look at ten American photographers, exploring the artists’ often ambivalent relationships to their Jewish backgrounds. Going against the grain of most criticism on the subject, Morris argues that it is difficult to label Jewish American photographers as unequivocal “outsiders” or “insiders” with respect to mainstream American culture. He shows it is equally difficult to assign a characteristic style to such a varied group, who range from self-taught photographers to those trained in art school. In eclectic ways, however, the contemporary photographers highlighted in After Weegee carry on the social justice and documentary tradition associated with Sid Grossman, Aaron Siskind, and the primarily Jewish Photo League of the 1930s by chronicling the downside of the Reagan revolution of the 1980s. Rather than record movements or trends in current Jewish American photography, Morris focuses in-depth on the work of Bruce Davidson, Jim Goldberg, Mel Rosenthal, Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, Allen Ginsberg, Annie Leibovitz, Tyagan Miller, and Marc Asnin. Like Weegee, these photographers share a tendency toward socially informed expression and an interest in self-expression via the operations of photography, inevitably shaped by histories of socially conscious or documentary imaging. Moving between photo history, cultural history, and close readings of the images, Morris traces a common thread among contemporary secular Jewish American photographers, artists who link the construction of personal identity to the representation of history. After Weegee broadens our understanding of the relationship between Jewishness and contemporary photography, challenging us to take a fresh look at much of what has come to be canonized as modern, postwar, and art photography.

The Poetry of Louise Glück: A Thematic Introduction (Volume 1)

A dominant figure in American poetry for more than thirty-five years, Louise Glück has been the recipient of virtually every major poetry award and was named U.S. poet laureate for 2003–2004. In a new full-length study of her work, Daniel Morris explores how this prolific poet utilizes masks of characters from history, the Bible, and even fairy tales. Morris treats Glück’s persistent themes—desire, hunger, trauma, survival—through close reading of her major book-length sequences from the 1990s: Ararat, Meadowlands, and The Wild Iris. An additional chapter devoted to The House on Marshland (1975) shows how its revision of Romanticism and nature poetry anticipated these later works. Seeing Glück’s poems as complex analyses of the authorial self via sustained central metaphors, Morris reads her poetry against a narrative pattern that shifts from the tones of anger, despair, and resentment found in her early Firstborn to the resignation of Ararat—and proceeds in her latest volumes, including Vita Nova and Averno, toward an ambivalent embrace of embodied life.By showing how Glück’s poems may be read as a form of commentary on the meanings of great literature and myth, Morris emphasizes her irreverent attitude toward the canons through which she both expresses herself and deflects her autobiographical impulse. By discussing her sense of self, of Judaism, and of the poetic tradition, he explores her position as a mystic poet with an ambivalent relationship to religious discourse verging on Gnosticism, with tendencies toward the ancient rabbinic midrash tradition of reading scripture. He particularly shows how her creative reading of past poets expresses her vision of Judaism as a way of thinking about canonical texts. The Poetry of Louise Glück is a quintessential study of how poems may be read as a form of commentary on the meanings of great literature and myth. It clearly demonstrates that, through this lens of commentary, one can grasp more firmly the very idea of poetry itself that Glück has spent her career both defining and extending.

Poetry. In this book the theme of journeying is predominant, as is the idea of coming to know the self in dialogue with others. The poems early in this collection tend to focus on art, artists, or the act of making, whether in the elevated sphere of the Jules Olitski-Clement Greenberg variety, or in the earthier realms of the Beach Boys, Porn Queens, and Feelies lead singer who is discussed by Linus (not the Peanuts character, but the failed artist of Greek myth). After several poems that concern self-portraiture and the act of making art as a form of person construal, come poems concerning growing up, traveling, and work. The collection ends with poems that offer signs of homecoming or redemption after a struggle that has involved personal loss and misfortune.
