This book intricately describes five dance companies that stemmed from the teachings of Martha Graham and George Balanchine, and the unique obstacles that each company faced. Quintet: Five American Dance Companies by Moria Hodgson factually examines these five American dance studios each of whom contributed to the world of dance today. From incorporating new styles to new ethnicities into dance, each of the five studios depicted overcame different obstacles. Hodgson exquisitely describes the style, dancers, and pieces of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Alvin Ailey Center Dance Theater, the American Dance Theater, the Dance Theater of Harlem, and the American Ballet Company. Paul Taylor studied under some of the most influential dance teachers in the world, but was one of the first who attempted to be unlike his teachers. Alvin Ailey Center Dance Theater is widely accepted today, but that has not always been the case with their style of modern dance. The third, American Dance Company/Merce Cunningham and Dance Company, originated in 1953. Cunningham was said to "revolutionize modern dance" with his unique style. Arthur Mitchel created the fourth American dance company, the Dance Theater of Harlem, in 1968. Arthur Mitchel was the first African American dancer at the New York School of Ballet. Lastly, Eliot Feld opened his first ballet in 1967 at the American Ballet Company. Feld studied at the New York Ballet School but decided to create his own company in 1968.
