Calling for a reassessment of the function of art in late capitalist society, Corporate Mentality focuses on the complex and ambiguous ways artistic production inhabits corporate processes, abandoning the autonomy of the artwork in order to elaborate resistant approaches to a world increasingly determined by commercial strategies and market concerns.
Based on an archive (1995–2001) maintained by Aleksandra Mir, it presents a diverse spectrum of artists who take on business as site, as material, and as subject of their work. As Will Bradley writes in frieze, “The book focuses on … an essential area of interest as artists wake up to the reality of the Clinton-era fantasy of ethical corporatism. The plan came out of Mir and Kelsey's realization that the publicity industry wasn't stealing artists' ideas, but simply employing artists, like Mir herself, who needed a day job. 'Radical' aesthetics that had taken at least six months to travel (we're in New York here) from downtown to uptown were now transferred almost instantaneously, causing artists to reassess their methods.”

This book provides a companion to Aleksandra Mir's latest body of work Space Tapestry: Faraway Missions, exhibited at Tate Liverpool and Modern Art Oxford.
Inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry and the anonymous artists who depicted Halley's Comet in 1066, the Space Tapestry is a large-scale, hand-drawn monochrome wall-hanging that forms an immersive environment. Much like a graphic novel, Space Tapestry tells an episodic visual story of space travel.
Over the past three years, Mir has maintained dialogues with professionals in the space industry and academia who have informed and inspired her. The work draws on themes relating to current debates, recorded events, scientific discoveries, technological innovations and predictions of imagined futures that currently affect all our lives.
This book contains both reproductions of the finished work and images from its collaborative creation with twenty-five young artists. On Saturday 28 August, 1999, against a background of puffing industrial plumes, a pinkish-blue sky, and the sound of bongo drum beats, Aleksandra Mir, dressed in a smart white dress and with American flag in hand, scaled the side of a moonscape of sand dunes and makeshift craters to become the first woman on the moon. The performance First Woman on the Moon marked the beginning of Mir's exploration of outer space as she staged a moon landing by transforming a Dutch beach into the moon's surface using the help of local people and heavy machinery. Mir's projects offer her own take on popular cultural myths and historical events, by combining religious iconography with NASA imagery or symbols of space travel. Her work reflects on these events that span half a millennium of human--mostly male-dominated--quest, transforming or deconstructing them into a make-believe world of her own. Mir resists and modifies; her work creates its own authenticity and truth. The Space Age consists of seven fold-out posters and a text by Martin Herbert.
