What would Arch Merrill have thought about the reprinting of his popular histories of Western New York. If someone had asked Merrill while he faced one of his countless deadlines at the Rochester, New York, Democrat & Chronicle, of which he was night city editor, he might have shrugged, lighted another cigarette or cigar, and waded into the urgent task at hand. Arch ( born Archie) Merrill always knew he was destined to be a newspaperman. Despite the fact that over a period of 27 years he poured out 23 volumes of historical sketches and lore, he would have dismissed any notion that he was a historian of any stripe.

The book was written by a writer for one of the Rochester newspapers. Lots of interesting history about the towns that were created with the development of the Erie Canal. There is a companion book. The Towpath is more than just a story of the old Erie Canal, fascinating ad that story is.
