From Library Journal\nThis latest in a series of popular music guides by Berger (e.g., Guide to Chamber Music: A Listener's Companion , Anchor: Doubleday, 1989; Guide to Sonatas: Music for One or Two Instruments , Anchor: Doubleday, 1991) summarizes in two- to three-page essays 100 of the most popular choral works from 40 composers ranging from Palestrina to Bernstein. To assist the concertgoer, the pieces cited usually include dual-language texts (though, surprisingly, none is given for Carmina Burana ), and each composer is treated with a short biography. More experienced listeners might argue with some of Berger's performance times, but that is a minor quibble with an otherwise fine book. As the only popular work currently available on choral music, this should certainly find its way to music lovers' book shelves. Recommended for most music collections.
