How do children learn to talk? This fundamental question continues to be a subject of lively and contentious debate among linguists and psychologists. The wide-ranging discussion of the work of other researchers provides the reader with a clear perspective in which to assess Dr McShane's own approach. Dr McShane shows that limited, but effective, communication is possible in the absence of words, and then traces the genesis of communication through the one-word stage to the development of grammatically structured utterances. His arguments are supported by data from the longitudinal study he carried out with six children between the ages of one and two years. In this book, the authors provide an account of learning difficulties, linking the theoretical with the practical. The central theme of the book is the role that cognitive factors play in these problems: how do children with learning difficulties differ in the way they process information?; and are the differences due to lack of efficiency or a disturbance in the cognitive system? The authors argue that it is only when the child's difficulty is established within a theoretical model of cognitive development that it is possible to develop intervention techniques to help the child in the acquisition of new skills. They go on to describe the skills and strategies children need in order to read, spell, talk and use arithmetic; they show how to assess what missing skills and wrong techniques lie behind learning difficulties, and they discuss the techniques which can be used to correct and compensate for these problems.

The BBC has been criticized and is hosting an internal investigation into how Savile's behavior was never called into question and how abuse allegations during his long career at the corporation failed to be flagged. An investigation is also underway into the canceling of a Newsnight program in 2011. The Department of Health has also said it will investigate its own conduct in appointing Savile to lead a "taskforce" overseeing the management of high security psychiatric hospital Broadmoor in 1998. Abuse is also alleged to have taken place at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, where Savile volunteered.
