This study of the Battle for Batangas province during the Philippine-American War of 1899-1902 is both an account of what life was like for the soldiers and civilians who participated in the war, and a revision of established scholarship that has viewed the masses as the backbone of the conflict. May demonstrates that the lion's share of Philippine resistance came in fact from the political and economic elites rather than the peasantry. Discussing the American side as well as the Philippine, May prefaces his study with a socio-historical probe of the decades immediately preceding the war and considers important aspects of Philippine life such as old-boy networks, family connections, patron-client bonds, municipal politics and political beliefs. He also reevaluates the behaviour of the Americans in the war, arguing that it was neither as unpleasant nor as praiseworthy as it has thus far been portrayed.

With Sonny Montes and Mexican American Activism in Oregon, Glenn Anthony May makes a major contribution to the literature on Oregon and Chicano history. 
On one level a biography of Oregon's leading Chicano activist, the book also tells the broader story of the state's Mexican American community during the 1960s and 1970s, a story in which Sonny Montes, a former migrant farmworker from South Texas, played an important part.
Montes was the key figure in the birth of a Chicano movement in Oregon during the 1970s, a movement that coalesced around the struggle for survival of the Colegio Cesar Chavez, a small college in Mt. No scholarly article in recent memory has caused as much controversy as Philippine academic circles as Glenn May's "A Part Revisited, A Past Distorted,"an extended critique of the "nationalist" school of Philippine historiography that appeared in the Diliman Review in 1983. That article serves as the starting point of this volume of essays by Professor May, one of the most respected historians of the Philippines in the United States. Relying on a wide range of primary sources, most of them archival, he takes issues with several articles of faith of the nationalists--among them, the notion that the Philippine-American War was a genuine popular struggle. He argues as well that a number of widely accepted ideas about the Philippine past--for example, the belief that the holders of elective office in the Philippine municipalities during the Spanish era were the actual holders of political power--are nothing more than myths. Furthermore, in his final essay, he takes some healthy swipes at the scholarly contribution of academics situated on both the right and left sides of the ideological spectrum.
