William Faulkner famously declared that the central theme of literature is 'the human heart in conflict with itself'. These words clearly describe the pivotal subject of Anne Marx's Full Circle, an assemblage of poems spanning more than five decades. One finds it in the first poem, Moment of Choice, and it appears in numerous variations throughout the collection, as in The Other Child, Nightmare, Between Departure and Return, and, most wrenchingly, in Affidavits Denied. Although many of the poems reflect the tensions and rewards of family life, the author also explores historical realities. In The Round Trip of David Berger, one of her longest and most complex narratives, she confronts a tragedy that still haunts the conscience of the world. Anne Marx writes in a variety of forms and styles, ranging from the sonnet to free verse. Among her most memorable poems is Property for Sale, a Shakespearean sonnet combining a poignant subject and masterful craftsmanship.--Alfred Dorn
