Human rights go to the heart of policing in democratic societies. Across the world, police are now governed by human rights principles and increasingly detailed standards - from arrest and detention to the regulation of protest and the use of lethal force. Yet there has been remarkably limited research examining human rights as a central feature of contemporary police reform, rhetoric and regulation. Policing Human Rights breaks new ground by offering one of the first sociologically inspired and empirically grounded accounts of how officers encounter and experience human rights law in their everyday work. The substantive insights and associated arguments of the book are based on unprecedented fieldwork with Police Service of Northern Ireland, including interviews and focus groups with over one hundred police officers, from over twenty police stations and five departments. Adopting an interdisciplinary style of analysis that draws on sociology, anthropology and organizational studies, the book takes the reader on a tour of four sites of policing to expose how and why human rights law comes to be socially constituted, organizationally conditioned and routinely interpreted and applied by police officers. The book offers an insight into the function of human rights law in modern policing, exposing the visions and values police officers' express in their daily narratives, sensemaking and practices.

Published 50 years after Christian Dior's "New Look" of 1947, and accompanying an exhibition at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this book presents a chronology of Dior's creations. They are drawn chiefly from the Costume Institute's collections, which include an extensive record of the designer's achievement as recognized by his New York clients of the 1940s and 1950s. Among the illustrations are extravagant evening wear, chic accessories, and details of Dior tailoring, as well as documentary photographs from the Dior Archives, Paris. The text places Dior's achievement in the cultural perspective of post-war renewal: the desire for optimism, the return to innocence, and the reclaiming of the pleasures of fine clothing and other sumptuary arts. Analyzing the "New Look", the authors set out to demonstrate the abiding impact of Dior's formulation of an icon for fashion's post-war renaissance.

Cubism and Fashion

Containing illustrations of paintings by Picasso, Braque, Delaunay and Leger, and designs by Chanel, Vionnet and Callot Soeurs, this is a study of the interrelationship between fashion and Cubism in the early-20th century. Published to accompany a 1998/9 exhibition at The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, it sets out to demonstrate how fashion's newly planar forms and cylindrical, waistless silhouette exemplified Cubism's interpretation of the body. Fashion illustration and photography of the period also followed the precepts of Cubist imagery, with its indeterminate space, cylinders, cones and rotation. The author, a fashion historian, traces Cubism's continuing synergy with fashion up to the present day.

Richard Martin, Curator in Charge, The Costume Institute, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, has written a conceptual and analytical text that both places Versace's work in historical context and provides new insights into the major inspirations and themes of the designer. In the Introduction, he discusses Versace's relationship with earlier designers' work, and he also clarifies Versace's metamorphosis of the prostitute into a positive, even exuberant expression of glamor and of independence from middle-of-the-road values. The body of the book is divided into seven conceptual sections, each beginning with a text summarizing the topic and each also including a brief discussion of individual costumes. The section titled "The Landmarks" is a retrospective look at Versace's major achievements. "Art" sketches in Versace's relationship with various artists, such as Alexander Calder and Robert and Sonia Delaunay, and emphasizes his particular sympathy for the work of Andy Warhol. In "History," we learn about Versace's creative interpretations of the past, from Byzantine art to the classicism of Madame Gres. "Materials" demonstrates Versace's extremely unusual incorporations of industrial plastics and leather, for example, which he so successfully translated into his own personal forms. Among the costumes in "Word and Image," we find a sparkling Vogue-inspired gown and small black leather dresses emblazoned with Japanese characters. The section on Versace's "Men" demonstrates his revolutionary views of the sensuous male in black leather with studs and fringes, or in brilliantly patterned shirt or jeans. And lastly, there is "The Dream," an evocation of Versace's visions of costumes for the opera and the dance, all of which are pure theater in the hands of this designer.
