Photographe née en 1896, immigrée juive hongroise dans le Paris des années 1920, Ergy Landau ouvre son studio et trouve sa place dans un milieu masculin et très compétitif en travaillant pour la publicité et la presse. Excellente technicienne, d’abord séduite par les expérimentations formelles de la Nouvelle Vision, elle affirme bientôt un style plus personnel. Mais contrairement à ses compatriotes (Moholy-Nagy, Kertész, Brassaï…), son nom reste peu présent dans l'histoire de la photographie. Ce livre entend rétablir Ergy Landau à sa juste place à travers une approche à la fois biographique et thématique de son œuvre. Surtout il retrace le chemin de vie singulier d'une des premières femmes photographes du XXe siècle que sa disparition sans héritier, en 1967, avait effacé du paysage.
