Rebellion within and persecution from without: this deadly combination faced the church in Zarahemla during the reign of King Mosiah. The trouble within arose where it was least expected, from the king's own home and the family of Alma, the presiding high priest. Under the rule of Mosiah's father, the great king Benjamin, all the people had pledged solemnly to serve the Lord. But the little children did not understand this covenant and were not converted to it. Many in this rising generation rejected the faith as they grew up. Chief among them were young Alma, son of the prophet Alma, and the four sons of Mosiah. They not only refused to follow their parents' teachings and turned to riotous living, but they also went among the Saints defying their own fathers and destroying the faith of those who would listen to them.

Adam, the first man, is a controversial figure in the minds of many people. So is Eve, his wife. Together, they probably are the most misunderstood couple who ever lived on the earth. This is hardly to be wondered at, though. Misconceptions and far-out theories have been bombarding the public concerning our first parents for centuries past. Probably the most to blame are teachers of religion themselves. Not knowing the facts about Adam and Eve, they have foisted their own private notions and uninspired creeds upon the people, with the result that a mass of confusion has mounted year after year. Their doctrine concerning original sin has been at the root of most of the trouble. But the more recent tendency of clergymen and scholars alike to call the Garden of Eden account in the Bible a mere myth has not helped the situation. Neither have the evolutionary theories that attempt to trace our pedigrees back to some accidental development of a single cell which, it is alleged, eventually became human Adding to the confusion are some who have so completely misunderstood gospel truths concerning the Garden of Eden that they assume that Adam was Deity, a thing completely at variance with both ancient scripture and modern revelation. Some Jewish scholars also have joined the parade by saying that the Bible accounts of the creation, of the Garden of Eden, of our first parents, and of the flood are all myths, with questionable parallels in the writings of other early peoples. While orthodox Jews still believe in the Torah and what it says about Adam and Eve, even they are becoming relatively fewer in number as disbelief invades the ranks of the "chosen race."

Archaeology has exploded many of the modern myths about ancient man. One of the great delusions has been that ancient peoples lived in deep ignorance and that their intelligence was only a little above the animal level. It is refreshing to learn now that many of the ancients were very bright people indeed, in some respects equal or superior to many of us who live today. Caveman stories and the pre-man tales are fast being swept under the rug where they belong as the "diggers for facts" ply their trade. Similar disrepute is likewise coming to the so-called scholarly claims that the Bible is but a collection of legends to be taken only lightly, if at all. Archaeology is reversing much of this. Already it has blown away much conjecture and supposition and now has unveiled data about the ancient past that help us to turn from fancy to fact and from uncertainty to definite history.

TOMORROW will be the one hundred and second anniversary of the birth of Joseph Smith, whom most of you here present believe was a Prophet of God. I have been invited to say something about him on this occasion. It is not at all my intention to deal with the incidents of Joseph Smith's eventful life; these are familiar to you. If I could attain the full desire of my heart, I would like to set before you somewhat the value of this man as a teacher of great truths. I desire to speak of him as a Prophet-Teacher, that is, as a Prophet acting in his capacity of Teacher, a Prophet's highest and noblest office. As an introduction to what I desire to say, I shall read a passage from a book quite famous for its literary merit-it has reached its ninth edition; also it is famous for the character sketches of prominent Americans of the early decades of the nineteenth century. The book, "Figures of the Past," was written by Josiah Quincy of the famous Quincy family of Massachusetts, a graduate of Harvard, 1821; mayor of Boston from 1845 to 1849. Mr. Quincy visited Nauvoo in May, 1844, forty-three days previous to the martyrdom of the Prophet, and though his "Figures of the Past" was not published until 1882, the year of his death, yet his recollections of the Prophet and his impressions of Nauvoo were drawn from his journal, written at the time of that visit, and numerous letters written to his friends about the same period. Mr. Quincy places his penportrait of "Joseph Smith at Nauvoo" with similar portraits of such eminent Americans as John Adams, Daniel Webster, John Randolph, Andrew Jackson, and the French soldier and statesman, Lafayette. The passage I am going to read is the opening paragraph of the chapter on "Joseph Smith at Nauvoo."
