Eine junge Frau reist 1930 wegen eines Lungenleidens von Paris ins Sanatorium von Hauteville. Dort findet sie ein Schreiben ihres Verlobten vor. Es ist ein Abschiedsbrief und darin steht: "Ich heirate ... Unsere Freundschaft bleibt." Die junge Frau versucht den Schock zu überwinden, indem sie auf die Zumutung antwortet - in einem Brief, der nie abgeschickt wird.
