For more than three centuries, scientists have studied the world as detached observers. In doing so, science has achieved marvelous results, but it has also lost the sense of the whole that earlier cultures possessed. By concentrating on the "text" of the physical world, science has lost the context―the etheric world of life forces. Goethean phenomenology (so named for Goethe's observations) is a scientific method capable of bringing the clarity of natural science to this context of phenomena. Unconsciously, scientific observers have always been using the context to read the text. The phenomenological method involves training observers to look at the activity of thinking itself as it perceives intentionally. It then uses this activity itself as a means of perception. The observer thus becomes conscious that physical nature is indeed a text, and that its meaning derives from the etheric context. Unlike the more common hypothetical and deductive methods―which presupose a detached observer―the phenomenological method is based on active participation by the observer. This eliminates the need to construct speculative hypotheses; the observer's awareness of his or her own intentionality ensures the veracity of the observations. The etheric world is not a new hypothesis; it is, however, a new domain of observation. The authors―Jochen Bockemühl, Christof Lindenau, Georg Maier, Ernst-August Müller, Hermann Poppelbaum, Dietrich Rapp, and Wolfgang Schad―have all written extensively on "participatory" science and related matters. Georg Maier, the former Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations of the 6. (SS)-Panzer-Armee, has written not only a monumental history of his former field army but a sweeping account of the little-known fighting on the southern portion of the Eastern Front in the final months of the war. 
Maier provides a truly objective overview of those operations by making use of primary sources — documents, war diaries and surviving senior commanders — to show the reader how decisions were made at senior levels of command and how certain post-war memoirs have only distorted the picture of what really happened in the final few months of the war. 
As such, it encompasses the operations of four different Waffen-SS corps and, by extension, nearly all of the "named" divisions of the Waffen-SS: The 1. Maier starts his narrative with part one of a three-part drama: The brutal and ill-fated fighting to relieve the encircled city of Budapest and the IX. SS-Gebirgs-Korps by Armeegruppe Balck (primarily by the IV. SS-Panzer-Korps). He then follows up with act two: A day-by-day account of the successful but operationally relatively inconsequential Gran Offensive of the I. SS-Panzer-Korps and Panzer-Korps "Feldhernnhalle." This is followed by the ill-fated Lake Balaton offensive, where the 6. Panzer-Armee — comprised of the I. SS-Panzer-Korps and the II. SS-Panzer-Korps, among other formations — was bled white combating prepared Soviet defenses in terrain that was completely ill suited for armored warfare. He concludes the text portion of the book with act three, which details the remaining two months of the war and includes the efforts of the 6. Panzer-Armee to defend Vienna and prevent the Soviet Army from advancing into the Reich. 
In the course of his narrative, Maier provides insights into the political wrangling of certain generals and presents a first-hand account of the handling of the infamous "cuff title" order issued by Hitler. (Maier personally presented the Teletype message to the Commander-in-Chief of the 6. Panzer-Armee, SS-Oberstgruppenführer Sepp Dietrich, in which Hitler demanded his elite formations remove their identifying cuff titles). Not only was Georg Maier there, but he also backs up every contention with prodigiously researched material consisting almost exclusively of primary sources. 
Whether interested in Waffen-SS formations in general or a student of military history with an interest in the command and control of military formations at the highest levels of command, this book will be of interest to you. This book was conceived as a phenomenological approach to knowledge -- that is, a study of the world in terms of its immediate phenomena. Since the sciences -- today often just taught by computer -- are moving further and further away from sensible perception the question arises: What is lost when knowing is separated from experience? In the academic classroom the answer to this question can sometimes appear to be »nothing«, but in actual practice, researchers will often put stress on the need for a handson apprenticeship before the new member of the team can even read their manuals properly. Practice as opposed to theory, still demands perceptual experience, but in stated theory there is no account of the component that only experience can provide. In attempting to give such an account, the authors concentrate on three aspects of experience. The first is the mental activity by which we attend to a particular phenomenon -- the activity by which we understand and pick out the phenomenon for consideration. The second is the aesthetic organization of phenomena. Phenomena are unified wholes rather than mere collections of parts, and the recognition of wholes is an aesthetic activity. The third aspect of experience the authors investigate, is its ability to motivate the experiencing individual. Moral responsibility needs to be grounded in the meaning of individual experience, but this requires a recognition of meaning -- hardly possible when we are preoccupied with abstract, universal laws to the exclusion of those particular events that comprise our biographies.
