The domination of Native Americans began in 1492 and continues in varying degrees of intensity through the present. This bibliography is focused on the history of the imposition of policies upon Native Americans by the governments of other peoples. All of the books and articles included in this work were selected because they represent activities in which Native Peoples were forced into work, religion, or a lifestyle that ran contrary to their traditions. This broad hemispheric approach to the history of national governments' Native American policies allows Magnaghi to show the similarities and differences of European attitudes toward Native Americans through a variety of Eurocentric experiences.The configuration of the topics is this volume is unusual among Native American bibliographies. Slavery, Labor, Evangelization, and Captivity were selected to broadly categorize titles based on the conditions that were imposed upon Native Americans. They provide a framework for analyzing to what degree Native Americans have responded to and been transformed by these conditions. The work is subdivided into geographical regions for easier utilization. The books and journal articles included were written in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese, allowing a broad sampling of areas and national experiences to be analyzed and compared. An excellent resource for researchers and scholars of Native American studies that will provide a rich set of avenues to expand upon the study of the Native American experience.

Several ethnic groups have come to Michigan from the British Isles. Each group of immigrants from this region—the Cornish, English, Irish, and Welsh—has played a significant role in American history. Historic records show that some early nineteenth-century Cornish immigrants were farmers and settled in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. However, the majority of early Cornish immigrants were miners, and much of their influence was felt in the Upper Peninsula of the state. Many of the underground miners from Cornwall got their start in this region before they migrated to other mining regions throughout the United States. Hard-working families came from throughout the peninsula of Cornwall, bringing their history, recipes, songs, religions, and other traditions to Michigan’s northern mining country. This nineteenth-century migration brought them to new homes in Keweenaw County, Houghton County, Copper Harbor, Eagle Harbor, and Presque Isle. In the 1830s, newly arrived immigrants also settled in the lower parts of Michigan, in Macomb, Washtenaw, Lenawee, and Oakland counties. The automobile boom of the 1920s sent many of these immigrants and their children to Metro Detroit from the Upper Peninsula, where their traditions are perpetuated today.

Brewing came to the Upper Peninsula in the 1600s, when French fur traders substituted pine needles for hops in batches of spruce beer. Promoted as a health drink, the evergreen suds remained in favor with the British army when it occupied the region. German immigrants drawn in by the mining boom introduced more variety to the area's fermented beverage selection, and the first of many commercial breweries opened in Sault Ste. Marie in 1850. Today, Keweenaw, Blackrocks and Ore Dock Brewing Companies are a few of the local craft brewers canning, bottling and shipping the malty flavor of the Peninsula throughout Michigan, Wisconsin and beyond.
