MacElrevey's Shiphandling for the Mariner, first published in 1983, is addressed primarily to the practicing mariner who already possesses some degree of professional knowledge, experience, and training. This third edition includes new material on the topics of training, voyage planning, bridge team training, and bridge resource management. New also is an expanded section on the use of simulation in training, including types of simulators (model and computer) and simulator curriculum for pilots. Carried forward from the original version are the series of practice maneuvers, designed so that an accurate picture can be developed of how a particular ship will react to a variety of manipulations under differing conditions.
