A message to Scotland

These personal recollections of their working lives by eight Scots women farm workers were recorded in interviews in 1997-98 by the Scottish Working People's History Trust. At the time of the interviews the respective ages of the eight women ranged from 82 to 93. All of them retained clear recollections of their working years on farms in the south-east of Scotland, as well as other aspects of their lives, including their housing, educational and recreational experiences. Their memories appear here in edited form, but in their own spoken words.

Mungo Mackay and the Green Table flourished not in the middle ages, but in the first half of the 20th century. Mackay, as agent and general manager of the Lothian Coal Company, ran a veritable reign of terror from the 1890s until his retirement and death on the eve of World War II. His domination was not confined to the miners at their work, for most of the Lothian Coal Company's miners and their families lived in the Company's tied houses at Newtongrange and Rosewell, and the threat of eviction was ever present. Seated at his famous Green Table, Mackay wielded a power so extensive and enduring that even today there is a saying among some of the older residents at Newtongrange: "Mungo's no' deid yet". This book is part of the "Flashbacks" oral history series. What it meant to live and work under the regime of Mungo Mackay is told in first-hand recollections by the miners themselves. Their memories span conditions of labour, wages and working hours, safety, housing, health and sickness, poverty, diet, mining trade unionism, religion, strikes, sports and the isolation but strong sense of community of the mining villages.

This book is an oral history of life and work in the Scottish Borders village of Lilliesleaf, based on interviews recorded in 1991-4 with 24 of its oldest inhabitants. They include farm, forestry and sawmill workers, shopworkers and domestic servants, the main local landowner, wartime Land Girls and a wartime evacuee. In their own words they describe daily life and work; social, political, religious and cultural activities; changes in farming practices; the huge impact of two World Wars; the closure of village shops as car ownership and supermarkets spread; and the rising cost of village housing, pushing younger villagers into the towns. Popular local practices, such as poaching and the annual Ball Day are discussed, as are issues such as hiring fairs and flittings, large families, schooling, overcrowding, poverty, unemployment, food and drink. There are also colourful tales of local characters such as Bobby the Banesetter, 'Dr' Blythe (a carter, dustman and sportsman who was often locked in a shed by his wife until he sobered up), tramps Bet the Boar, Sailor Jack and Big Bella Robertson (a 'holy terror and strong as any man') who lifted the village policeman and laid him down on the road 'on the bane o' his back' when he came to arrest her for being drunk. The book gives a vivid portrayal of country and village life in Scotland during a century of great change.

This collection, based on interviews with 14 librarians and other library staff working in Scotland in the twentieth century, tells the stories of their working lives, explaining how libraries developed from the difficulties of the inter-war period and the austerity following the Second World War to become a well-used and important feature of local communities, committed to delivering an expanding range of public services. The book also takes us behind the library counter with tales of how the insecure false teeth of one staff member at Glasgow's Mitchell Library regularly plummeted four floors down the shaft of the book hoist and had to be retrieved by a colleague; of how Mills &amp; Boon readers, to whom authors and titles meant little, inscribed their personal marks on books they had read to avoid borrowing the same ones again; of how a future leader of a national trade union expanded his mind and honed his political views in a small branch library in Fife; of how the mobile library in Midlothian, like the Pony Express, always got through regardless of the weather.As background to their working lives, the interviewees describe their familycircumstances, housing, schooling, pastimes, reading and wartime experiences. Charting the evolution of librarianship, the book reveals how our libraries have served society for generations and confirms Andrew Carnegie's belief that public libraries are one of the most potent agencies for good.
