This book attempts to understand an ancient people in terms of modern evolutionary biology. A basic idea is that Judaism is a group evolutionary strategy-what one might term an evolutionarily significant way for a group of people to get on in the world. This book was originally published in 1994 by Praeger Publishers. The Writers Club edition contains a new preface, Diaspora Peoples, describing several interesting group evolutionary strategies: The Gypsies, the Hutterites and Amish, the Calvinists and Puritans, and the Overseas Chinese.

Die hier vertretene These besteht darin, dass diese intellektuellen Bewegungen von Juden dominiert wurden, dass das Denken der meisten Menschen, die an diesen Bewegungen teilnahmen, von einem starken jüdischen Identitätsgefühl geprägt war und dass dieselben Personen durch ihr Engagement im Interesse der jüdischen Gemeinschaft gehandelt haben. Es gibt also nichts in den oben erwähnten Ausführungen, was darauf hindeutet, dass das Judentum eine einheitliche Bewegung ist oder dass alle sozialen Schichten der jüdischen Gemeinschaft an diesen Bewegungen beteiligt waren. Juden können ein wichtiger oder sogar notwendiger Bestandteil radikaler politischer oder sozialwissenschaftlicher Bewegungen sein, und ihr Judentum kann mit diesen Bewegungen in hohem Maße kompatibel sein oder sogar ihre Entwicklung fördern, ohne dass die Mehrheit der Juden daran beteiligt ist. Folglich ist die Frage nach den Auswirkungen des jüdischen Einflusses auf die Kultur der Nichtjuden unabhängig von der Frage, welcher Anteil der jüdischen Gemeinschaft an den Bewegungen beteiligt war, die auf die Zerstörung der Kultur der Nichtjuden abzielen. Diese Unterscheidung ist wichtig, weil Antisemiten einerseits oft implizit oder explizit davon ausgegangen sind, dass die jüdische Beteiligung an radikalen politischen Bewegungen Teil einer viel größeren jüdischen Verschwörung ist, in die auch reiche jüdische Kapitalisten sowie die Juden an der Spitze der verschiedenen Medien, der akademischen Welt und so vieler anderer Bereiche des öffentlichen Lebens verwickelt sind. Ebenso wenig bedeutet die Tatsache, dass die meisten Juden vor 1930 keine Zionisten waren, zumindest nicht offen, dass die jüdische Identität nichts mit dem Zionismus zu tun hatte, oder dass Juden keinen erheblichen Einfluss auf den Zionismus ausübten, oder dass der Zionismus keine Auswirkungen auf die Gesellschaften der Nichtjuden hatte, oder dass einige Nichtjuden nicht zu glühenden Verfechtern der zionistischen Sache geworden sind.
