34 works in six volumesSpooner, an intellectual activist and later a philosophical anarchist, was one of 19th century America's most profound minds, producing some of the finest constitutional arguments ever devised against slavery, concerning himself equally with the subtle subjugation of free citizens by a governmental system which he saw become increasingly restrictive of personal rights.   Spooner had a genius for opposing the government.    His protests were not limited to brilliant writings on slavery, the Constitution, the jury system, copyright practices, and the economics of our rapidly industrializing country.   In the mid-1840s Spooner actually forced a reduction in postal rates by setting up his own private mail company in competition with the U.S. Post Office.

Lysander Spooner lived in the midst of the Golden Age of America and is most famous for his work as an abolitionist philosopher and as the author of this treatise: No Treason. To explain this forgotten philosopher. we must also explain an almost forgotten philosophy - that of Natural Law. Natural Law holds that each human being, regardless of the arbitrary distinctions of biology, is endowed at birth with certain unalienable rights that are superior to whatever "rights" are granted by the law of man. These rights are not given by anyone but are instead inherent to our existence and cannot be rightfully withheld by anyone over another. For Spooner, the fact that the Constitution ensured these rights in its Preamble only to destroy them in the writing that followed was the most shameful hypocrisy. This glaring contradiction was enough for Spooner to declare the entire document null and void, superseded by the Divine Right of humanity to life, liberty, and property. However, as a lawyer, he also could not fail to mention that a contract - whether social or otherwise - is neither valid nor binding upon any parties other than those who consent to it. Like all great philosophers of human liberation, Lysander Spooner's name has almost entirely passed from the historical record and certainly from the collective memory of the American people. May his great work, now restored to its former glory, herald a new dawn in the minds of men. True freedom, not the abstract writings of self-selected bureaucrats, exists within each of us as our prime possession. It cannot be circumvented unless we allow it to be usurped. It is for that reason that No Treason: The Constitution of No Authority appears again - to stoke that fire of liberty that has burned within us from the dawn of civilization.

Paperback 55pp. Lysander Spooner (January 19, 1808 - May 14, 1887) was an American anarchist, entrepreneur, political philosopher, abolitionist, supporter of the labor movement, and legal theorist of the nineteenth century. He is also known for competing with the U.S. Post Office with his American Letter Mail Company, which was forced out of business by the United States government. He has been identified by some contemporary writers as an anarcho-capitalist, while other writers and activists are convinced by his advocacy of self-employment over working for an employer for wages, that he was an anti-capitalist or a socialist, notwithstanding his support for private ownership of the means of production and a free-market economy. No Treason has it origins in The Union government's actions during the Civil War. In response, Spooner published one of his most famous political tracts, No Treason. In this lengthy essay, Spooner argued that the Constitution was a contract of government which had been irreparably violated during the war and was thus void. Furthermore, since the government now existing under the Constitution pursued coercive policies that were contrary to the Natural Law and to the consent of the governed, it had been demonstrated that document was unable to adequately stop many abuses against liberty or to prevent tyranny from taking hold. Spooner bolstered his argument by noting that the Federal government, as established by a legal contract, could not legally bind all persons living in the nation since none had ever signed their names or given their consent to it - that consent had always been assumed, which fails the most basic burdens of proof for a valid contract in the courtroom. Spooner widely circulated the No Treason pamphlets, which also contained a legal defense against the crime of treason itself intended for former Confederate soldiers (hence the name of the pamphlet, arguing that "no treason" had been committed in the war by the south). These excerpts were published in DeBow's Review and some other well known southern periodicals of the time.
