This novel is richly peopled with characters who work in concert  with or against Gilbow Brown the unscrupulous sheriff who uses the law  as a device to fuel his insatiable appetite for money and corrupt  power. No character emerges more impressively than Bo's mother Ruby.  When advised by her lover Bill Ray Bordelon that Sheriff Brown is going  to destroy her son she involves herself in a deadly struggle that plays  her beauty and cunning off against the unmitigated corruption and brute  strength of the sheriff. A struggle from which only one can emerge  alive and victorious.  is the story of a savage way of life that spawns  injustice and intransigence unique to the place called the south.
