Focusing on the works of J. M. W. Turner, John Constable, and their contemporaries, this richly illustrated book explores the development, variety, and innovation of the landscape oil sketch in British art, beginning with its appearance in the 1770s. With insight into the different modes used for oil sketching in this period―a time when working en plein air was still comparatively unusual―the authors show how each practitioner approached similar subjects. The result is an accessible introduction to the techniques of sketching and the often surprising connections that can be drawn among the artists involved. The selection of works, drawn chiefly from the resources of the Clore Gallery, shows the astonishing speed with which Turner developed from modest beginnings as a boy of twelve into an artist of extraordinary range and ability by the age of twenty-five. All aspects of Turner's varied output are represented, from life studies drawn at the Royal Academy schools, and watercolours of picturesque scenery made after his return from tours throughout Britain, to the large watercolours of the North Welsh mountains of circa 1798-1799, unrivaled for expressive grandeur and subtlety of atmospheric effect.

Turner: The Fifth Decade : Watercolours, 1830-1840

The Norwich Society of Artists held meetings and ran exhibitions from about 1803 to 1833. Crome and Cotman were leading figures in the Society and their pupils, including Stark and Vincent, became successful in their own right. Although their work was purchased by major British patrons, they were also sustained by the enthusiasm of local collectors for their original portrayal of rural scenes. Cotman was an early master of the new fashion for painting outdoors and produced an outstanding body of watercolors during his periods of residence in Norfolk.

Its effect was to transform the modest tinted drawing of the topographer into a powerful and highly flexible means of expression for some of the Romantic era's greatest artists, among them Thomas Girtin, J.M.W.
