For much of her own century, Elizabeth Gaskell was recognized as a voice of Victorian convention&emdash;-the loyal wife, good mother, and respected writer&emdash;-a reputation that led to her steady decline in the view of twentieth-century literary critics. Recent scholars, however, have begun to recognize that Mrs. Gaskell's high standing in Victorian society allowed her to effect change in conventional ideology. Linda K. Hughes and Michael Lund focus this reevaluation on issues pertaining to the Victorian literary marketplace.Victorian Publishing and Mrs. Gaskell's Work portrays an elusive and self-aware writer whose refusal to grant authority to a single perspective even while she recirculated the fundamental assumptions and debates of her era enabled her simultaneously to fulfill and deflect the expectations of the literary marketplace. While she wrote for money, producing periodical fiction, major novels, and nonfiction, Mrs. Gaskell was able to maintain a tone of warmth and empathy that allowed her to imagine multiple social and epistemological alternatives. Writing from within the established rubrics of gender, narrative, and publication format, she nevertheless performed important cultural work.

Although scholars are aware that serialization was the usual publication format for the Victorian novel, few take into account how this special reading experience affected the meaning of Thackeray's novels for his audience. Thackeray used a number of techniques to encourage his readers to take an active and prolonged part in his installment fiction. Michael Lund's study focuses on the reading of Thackeray's novels and investigates how Victorian understanding of Vanity Fair and Thackeray's other major texts was significantly shaped by the manner in which readers encountered these novels.Situating modern readers in the context of the Victorian audience, particularly within the monthly serial mode, Lund demonstrates in what ways Thackeray made use of his readers' prolonged commitment to his fictional worlds to shape and refine Victorian culture in positive ways.

The Lund family's gift of the poem to Southeast perpetuates such feelings, and all of us involved in the production of this book have come to share them as well. We hope that reading the book will draw others into an ever-widening circle of friendship like that begun years ago when a kind and sympathetic family physician was moved to write a poem about a beautiful little girl.

Only when I had finished a good draft of most of these stories did I realize the characters were often seen eating--eating and talking. I realized then that this was no accident, as most of these characters are aging veterans who look for places to voice their thoughts. And throughout all ages and in all cultures, sharing a meal allows us to put into words what we have experienced. When wine is added, of course, tongues are even looser. In these pages, then, sometimes older vets eat with younger ones; on other occasions they share a table with civilians; a few times they are a group by themselves. Their mealtime companions can be family, friends, acquaintances, even relative strangers; but inevitably in the course of conversation some aspect of their military experience surfaces. Many times what is revealed has been long concealed, though only in a few cases could such moments be classified as what is termed in one story "the F-word," a flashback to a traumatic event. Still, when finally in the open, the remembered experience puts into perspective the lives and values of all who are present. So, this volume of stories is an event to which I invite readers of all kinds. Partake of those tales that appeal to you. Put aside any that don't suit your tastes. My hope is a few will inspire memory, thought, and a desire to respond in word or deed. In an era when only a small percentage of citizens choose to serve in the military, the stories of those who do deserve at least the attention of the rest of us.

Growing Up on Route 66 is set in a Missouri small town along “America’s Main Street.” Most of the action takes place in a neighborhood known to the children growing up there as the "Circle.” That time and place are remembered by the novel’s narrator as ideal, but closer scrutiny repeatedly--and often humorously--complicates this innocent picture. The landscape Mark Landon comes to appreciate contains the great promise this nation enjoyed after World War II. For those living west of the Mississippi especially, this prospect was symbolized by The Mother Road, Route 66.
