Reassessing the career of the hugely influential Harper's Bazaar art director, who changed the course of twentieth-century American photography and graphic design &nbsp; This lavishly illustrated volume explores the influence and significance of the Russian-born photographer, designer, and instructor Alexey Brodovitch (1898-1971), best known for his art directorship of the American fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar between 1934 and 1958, as well as his tutelage of many celebrated documentary and fashion photographers, including Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Eve Arnold, and Lillian Bassman. Though disparate in their aesthetic approaches, these figures are unified by their responses to Brodovitch's dictum to "astonish me." The authors address Brodovitch's impact on photography as an artistic medium in the mid-twentieth century and explore how European art and design became the foundation of a new American print culture. Brodovitch's own work will be illuminated through his personal projects--such as the magazine Portfolio and the photographic project Ballet, which depicted performances of the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo in the United States (whose evolution echoed Brodovitch's own émigré condition). Case studies of his transformative collaborations with photographers such as Arnold, Avedon, Penn, Lisette Model, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Hans Namuth, and André Kertész reveal pivotal encounters that may surprise even the most ardent photography aficionado. While her father did not believe in formal education for women, Loy convinced him to let her study at Künstlerinnenverein, a women's arts college in Munich, and the Académie Colarossi, in Paris. Loy began publishing 'free verse' in 1914, dabbled in Futurism, and then in 1916 moved to New York to join the avant-garde arts and literary scene, alongside Dadaists like Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Tristan Tzara, and publishers Jane Heap and Margaret Anderson (et al.). The prig of passion--- To your professorial paucity Proto-plasm was mad Evolving us--- Loy would go on to be a leading poet of the post-1913 'new verse' movement - culminating in her 1923 book, Lunar Baedeker - and her poetic innovations were praised by numerous contemporaries, including William Carlos Williams, Alfred Kreymborg, Walter Arensberg, and T.S. Elliot. Though it would be 25 years until Loy would publish a 2nd book of poetry, she continued to write and make assemblages until her death in 1966. All poems start as facsimiles - to preserve the original fonts - which are then cleaned up, edited for consistency, and spaciously laid-out, adorned with borders, illustrations, and ornaments from the books and magazines they originally appeared in. These are not "reprints" of previously existing books, but newly crafted collection, lovingly edited from public domain material, for the serious poetry lover.

Posthumously launched as the "electric-age Blake", Mina Loy's futurist techniques were unlike anything British critics had seen before; her subjects - sex, parturitiion, prostitution, suicide, addiction, retardation - were considered shocking even by some modernists. Updating and correcting the earlier book, this edition features previously unknown works by Loy rescued from Dada archives and avant-garde magazines. All of Loy's futurist and feminist satires are included, as are the poems from her Paris and New York periods, the cycle of "Love Songs", and her portraits-in-verse which define the trajectory of her favoured company and geography - from fellow modernist Joyce and Brancusi in Paris in the 1920s to fellow destitutes in New York's Lower East Side in the 1940s.
