Smillie, John Henry Twachtman, and Thomas Waterman Wood. These artists sought to imbue the traditionally rigid line of engraving with the freedom and spontaneity they expressed in their painting. The book includes some of the etching revival's most beautiful images, notably the atmospheric landscapes of Long Island's East End. Many of the prints in the Parrish's collection are bon à tirer, that is, the first impression that was fully acceptable to the artist and the printer. The quality of these works evokes the moment of complete artistic collaboration shared by artist and printer, when the 'master' print was pulled from the press.

The Parrish Art Museum, on Long Island's East End, holds one of the largest public collections of William Merritt Chase in the United States: over forty paintings and works on paper, and a wealth of archival photographs and documents.
This volume features thirty works from his whole career: early still lifes from Europe, famous New York park scenes and studio works from the 1880s, and landscape paintings and portraits from the 1890s and 1900s. It also includes many family photographs taken during summer spent in Shinnecock Hills, Long Island, where Chase founded, and taught at, the Summer School of Art.

William Merritt Chase: A Life in Art

This monograph explores how John Graham became an influential figure in American painting and discusses the development of his distinctly American approach to art-making. John Graham was an American Modernist and figurative painter. He was a mentor figure to artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Arshile Gorky and a notable influence on Abstract Expressionist artists such as Lee Krasner and David Smith. This book includes more than 50 paintings and a selection of important works on paper. Scholarly essays provide insight on each stage of Graham’s career and the practice of art historical investigation, while commentary from contemporary artists offers an understanding of how Graham influenced their work. A reprint of Graham’s seminal article, “Primitive Art and Picasso,” first published in 1937, reveals his academic and artistic brilliance.
