It is autumn on a small farm in the St. Croix River valley of Minnesota. Jessie is a stubborn old woman who lives alone with her memories. She has alienated her two daughters since the death of her husband, but she still hopes they will come home, and together they will bring the farm back to what it was in the past.Kenneth, a veteran of the Viet Nam war, haunted by the demons of his past, has been drifting, never settling in one place. He has been sent by Jessie's neighbor to help get the farmwork done before winter. She doesn t trust him, but knows she can't do the work alone. As they work together, they become friends by telling each other their stories of the past.
