China's Cultural Diplomacy: A Great Leap Outward? (Routledge New Diplomacy Studies)

This book examines China’s contemporary global cultural footprints through its recent development of cultural diplomacy. The volume presents an alternative analytical framework to examine China’s cultural diplomacy, which goes beyond the Western-defined concept of ‘soft power’ that prevails in the current literature. This new approach constructs a three-dimensional framework on Orientalism, cultural hegemony and nationalism to decipher the multiple contexts, which China inhabits historically, internationally and domestically. The book presents multiple case studies of the Confucius Institute, and compares the global programme located around the world with its Western counterparts, and also with other Chinese government-sponsored endeavours and non-government-initiated programmes. The author aims to solve the puzzle of why China’s efforts in cultural diplomacy are perceived differently around the world and helps to outline the distinctive features of China’s cultural diplomacy. This book will be of much interest to students of diplomacy, Chinese politics, foreign policy and International Relations in general.

The Mirage of China: Anti-Humanism, Narcissism, and Corporeality of the Contemporary World (Culture and Politics/Politics and Culture, 5)

Today’s world is one marked by the signs of digital capitalism and global capitalist expansion, and China is increasingly being integrated into this global system of production and consumption. As a result, China’s immediate material impact is now felt almost everywhere in the world; however, the significance and process of this integration is far from understood. This study shows how the a priori categories of statistical reasoning came to be re-born and re-lived in the People’s Republic - as essential conditions for the possibility of a new mode of knowledge and governance. From the ruins of the Maoist revolution China has risen through a mode of quantitative self-objectification. As the author argues, an epistemological rift has separated the Maoist years from the present age of the People’s Republic, which appears on the global stage as a mirage. This study is an ethnographic investigation of concepts - of the conceptual forces that have produced and been produced by - two forms of knowledge, life, and governance. As the author shows, the world of China, contrary to the common view, is not the Chinese world; it is a symptomatic moment of our world at the present time.

Les Notes sur la Capitale de l'Ouest (Xijing zaji) offrent, sous la forme fragmentaire de brèves scènes et de descriptions sans organisation apparente, une vision éclatée, précise et étrange à la fois, de la glorieuse cité de Chang'an, capitale des Han occidentaux. Ces notes sont traditionnellement considérées comme le reste de notes historiques rédigées par l'un des plus brillants lettrés de l'époque des Han, Liu Xin (46 av. J.-C.-23 ap. J.-C.), c'est-à-dire l'ensemble des notes qui, s'écartant trop de l'écriture orthodoxe de l'histoire, ne furent pas intégrées dans le Livre des Han (Han shu) rédigé par Ban Gu. Ce texte inclassable se situe d'emblée à mi-chemin entre l'enregistrement des faits, soucieux de véridicité et de détail, et l'anecdote, plus portée vers l'exagération, la déformation, voire le fantastique, à tel point qu'il constitue l'une des sources du genre romanesque. Ces notes sont aussi celles d'un monde au bord du gouffre. En effet, au sein de la description fascinante des richesses et des fastes de la capitale percent sans cesse la disparition et la mort, comme dans les scènes évoquant la vie dans le gynécée impérial. Prise dans les tourments politiques de l'époque, la capitale de l'Ouest sera détruite en 23 de notre ère, l'année même de la mort de Liu Xin, et les Han orientaux déplaceront leur capitale plus à l'est, à Luoyang.  Grâce à sa traduction, Jacques Pimpaneau rend pour la première fois ce texte accessible au lecteur occidental, invité à parcourir les palais, les jardins et les tombes de la capitale disparue.
