<p>Chloroform, discovered in 1831, has had a multitude of roles. This book traces the social, medical & criminal history of the drug, from early medical attempts to create oblivion to chloroform's discovery & resultant use & misuse. Initially viewed with suspicion, chloroform gained immense popularity after it was administered to Queen Victoria during childbirth. However, the price of this anesthesia was many sudden, inexplicable deaths under surgery, which caused years of controversy. On an even more sinister note, chloroform featured in thefts, rapes & murder. Today chloroform is no longer used as an anesthetic, but has a multitude of uses in industry & medical research, including a role in DNA. It is also a by-product of the chlorination of water.
