Bailey and Justin Rudd, a neighborhood boy with a reputation of being a bully, are hired to help the Keswicks with cleaning and repairs. The kids are excited to discover valuable and historic items among the trash inside the old house. Then, one by one, these treasures disappear. Justin's unusual behavior makes him the main suspect as detectives Noah, Fred, and Bailey try to solve the mystery.

In it, Bailey Fish and her grandmother welcome the first guests at Keswick Inn. Elmo and Feather Phigg bring with them a mysterious, locked green suitcase that contains a Jamestown, Va., mystery. The children want to know what's inn it. Meanwhile, Sparrow, a purposefully mute foster child arrives and Bailey and her friends organize a party to make the child laugh or talk. The mystery deepens when another visitor appears. Like all the other books in the series, this contains book discussion questions, a glossary, Web links, other references, and historical material and a glossary.

Book 7 in the Bailey Fish Adventure Series begins when Bailey Fish, her grandmother, Sugar, and their neighbors are delighted when Captain Calliope shows up at Keswick Inn with his Great Goateenies. The captain hopes to put together a new circus act with an unlikely combination of animals to replace his original, famous Great Goateenies that performed amazing tricks. Shorty after his arrival, Captain Calliope mysteriously disappears, leaving behind the new Goateenies with instructions for their care. Bailey, Justin Rudd, Noah and Fred Keswick and their foster sister, Sparrow, try to train the animals in his absence and plan their own backyard circus. However, the Goateenies prove difficult to teach. Other problems arise when Bailey learns of her traveling mother's surprising news, and later confronts a bully at a party. The famous Ballet of the Elephants is part of the story.

When Bailey, 11, and her friends, Noah and Fred Keswick (12) help unload the cartons, they make a surprising discover. Several books contain clues to a mystery involving a Florida shell found off of Sanibel. Strangers arrive looking for books by a certain author, and the Keswicks surprise the kids with rescue horses to live at the country inn. Bailey helps Miss Bekka, the boys' mother, plan a special surprise for the Book Barn's grand opening, and finally, Bailey must make an important decision. Nonfiction elements of the book include information on horses belonging to famous Americans, Gulf Coast shells, and rescue horses. As with other books in the series, there are discussion questions, a glossary, related reading and Web materials.

Mother was a hoarder and so is Lunie's brother, Dayton, who moves in with her temporarily because there is no room at Mother's. Lunie's circumscribed life quickly spins out of control when Dayton's gift of a stuffed moose with amazing mechanical attributes, becomes stuck in her front door, and friends Dayton makes on Facebook invade Lunie's life and home. Overwhelmed, Lunie seeks professional help online from the dubious Dr. Manngo, who offers odd, yet comforting, advice. She shares with him her childhood issues, such as Mother's frightening refrigerator with fuzzy leftovers, problems with Dayton, her bunny slippers, Dumpster nightmares, plus her dislike of neighbor Coreen Pomphrey's new reality TV cooking show, and her brother's walk-about business. However, Lunie is increasingly unable to get a grip on her own life and discovers that Mother is still a force to be reckoned with. Despite the many distractions, Lunie types away on her novel, never quite sure of where her characters are headed in their steamy relationships. But there are always surprises at the door, and they aren't all bad.

The treasurers are not the only surprises for Bailey. An early-morning knock on her grandmother's door announces unexpected visitors. Linda Salisbury's retelling of John Mercer Langston's autobiography From the Virginia Plantation to the National Capital brings to life to this almost forgotten African-American statesman. Despite discrimination and blatant racism before and after the Civil War, Langston's achievements are many in the field of education, as an attorney, as an elected official before he had the right to vote, as inspector general of the Freedmen's Bureau, as founder of Howard University's law school and its dean and later acting president. He received two degrees from Oberlin College, was an abolitionist, and was the first president of Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute in Petersburg, Virginia (now Virginia State University). He was a contemporary and rival of Frederick Douglass, and finally was seated in the disputed election of 1888 as the first black congressman from Virginia. Salisbury has added photos and images to her book, as well as additional details to provide historical context.
