La face cachée de la lune raconte en parallèle la relation tendue de deux frères à la suite du décès de leur mère et la course folle à la conquête de l’espace entre Américains et Soviétiques. Philippe, éternel candidat au doctorat, obligé de faire de la réclame téléphonique pour arrondir ses fins de mois, se passionne pour l’espace et souhaite que sa thèse, portant sur le grand physicien Tsiolkovski, soit publiée. Jaloux du succès de son cadet, présentateur vedette de la météo, il est à couteaux tirés avec lui quand vient le temps de liquider les biens de sa mère. En parallèle, il prépare une bande vidéo destinée à un éventuel auditoire extraterrestre en filmant son modeste logement et en en présentant la banalité comme témoignage de la vie sur terre. Présentée à la manière d’un spectacle d’humour à sketches, la pièce renoue avec un des thèmes majeurs du théâtre antique, soit l’affrontement des frères. Conçu, mis en scène et interprété par Robert Lepage, ce quatrième spectacle solo (après Vinci, Les Aiguilles et l’Opium et Elseneur) est peut-être la plus autobiographique de ses œuvres. La face cachée a d’ailleurs été écrite à la suite de la mort de la mère de l’artiste. Les souvenirs d''enfance et d''adolescence deviennent les repères de ce spectacle orienté autour d''une question, fondamentale: « Sommes-nous seuls ? ».La critique a dit de La face cachée de la lune que Lepage y redéfinissait le one man show. Jouant tous les rôles, l’interprète crée, à partir d’un minimum d’accessoires (une planche à repasser, le hublot d’une machine à laver, une étagère), une table, une mobylette, une bicyclette, un appareil de musculation, un engin spatial, un hublot, un bocal à poisson, un téléviseur, dans une véritable poésie de l’apesanteur. Reprise à la scène par Yves Jacques, la pièce a été adaptée pour l’écran par l’auteur lui-même. Des illustrations tirées de ces spectacles de même que du film ponctuent le livre.
