Leaver is professor emeritus of sacred music, Westminster Choir College, Princeton; and has previously been visiting professor at the Juilliard School, New York, Yale Institute of Sacred Music, and Queen’s University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Between 1984 and 2018 he wrote the program notes for the Bach Choir of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and from time to time contributes similar writings for the Bach Collegium Japan. Professor Leaver is a past president of both the Internationale Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Hymnologie and the American Bach Society, and is an honorary member of the American Bach Society and the Riemenschneider Bach Institute. He is the author of many Bach articles that have appeared in such journals as the Bach Jahrbuch, the Journal of the Riemenscheider Bach Institute, and Early Music, and has contributed to standard reference works and volumes of essays on Bach and his world. As an editor he oversees monographs in the series Contextual Bach Studies, and his most recently edited Bach publications includethe Routledge Research Companion to Johann Sebastian Bach (2016), Exploring Bach’s B-Minor Mass (2020), with Yo Tomita and Jan Smaczny, and Bach and the Counterpoint of Religion (2018).

Bach’s Passions are among the most important and well-loved works in the choral repertoire. They are performed regularly throughout the world, as well as being readily accessible on CD and DVD recordings. They continue to delight, challenge and astound people who have heard them many times, or who encounter these masterpieces for the first time. Despite their popularity and exposure Bach’s Passions are not always understood - being variously considered as static operas, independent oratorios, anti-Semitic propaganda, etc - because they are usually heard within contexts that are very different from what the composer had in mind when creating them. Today they are heard as independent concert music whereas they originated as dependent worship music, the product of specific historical, liturgical, theological, hymnodical and hermeneutical traditions. This book is an investigation of these five primary backgrounds and contexts in order to provide hearer and performer alike with a deeper understanding of these remarkable works. The first section charts the history of the pre-Bach Passion, from the early beginnings until the eighteenth-century. The second section deals with the liturgical functions of the Passion narratives in Lutheran usage throughout Lent and Holy week, especially in Leipzig where Bach was responsible for annual Passion performances for the twenty-seven years he was the Thomaskantor. The third section explores the theology of the Passion as expounded in sermons by Luther and later Lutheran theologians, especially the sermons and Bible commentaries that Bach had access to in his own personal library. These writings illuminate Bach’s particular settings of the Passion narratives as well as his compositional choices for the extra-Biblical movements that punctuate the Biblical narratives. Understanding Bach's Passions

Authoritative study by a renowned musicologist and Reformation scholar Many scholars think that congregational singing was not established in Lutheran worship until well after the start of the Reformation. In this book Robin A. Leaver calls that view into question, presenting new research to confirm the earlier view that congregational singing was both the intention and the practice right from the beginning of the Wittenberg reforms in worship. Leaver's study focuses on the Wittenberg hymnal of 1526, which until now has received little scholarly attention. This hymnal, Leaver argues, shows how the Lutheran Reformation was to a large degree defined, expressed, promoted, and taken to heart through early Lutheran hymns. Examining what has been forgotten or neglected about the origins of congregational hymnody under Martin Luther's leadership, this study of worship, music, and liturgy is a significant contribution to Reformation scholarship.
