Until the 1940's New Zealand was dependent on shipping for its links with the outside world.  Its trade and people moved by sea alone.  Foremost in providing those links was the country's major commercial enterprise, the Union Steam Ship Company, second only in size and importance to the Government itself.  The Union Company's part in the development of South Pacific commerce is brought to life in this book through the action-packed careers of one of its best known and colourful captains, Arthur Davey, and its flagship of the 1930's the Awatea. Davey was the Union Company's speerhead in responding to the challenge of the American Matson ships in the 1930's.  In the Awatea he was at last given the means to do so.
