Union County Oral Traditions Project

Documents the high-fired utilitarian pottery in numerous central Pennsylvania counties. In addition to an overview, chapters are devoted to the makers and their wares from each county. An appendix lists all the potters, their periods of activity, and the precise stamps they used and when. This new edition has been revised with information gathered since it first appeared in 1977.

This book examines the 19th- and 20th-century baskets made by immigrants and their descendants, and points out in what ways these baskets resemble or differ from those made in other parts of the country. Regional styles within the state are identified and baskets are discussed in terms of changing construction methods, materials, and the forms or shapes used by the makers. A list of documented basketmakers is included.

Examines the work and world of rural blacksmiths: wheelwrights; lock, gun, and spoonsmiths; cutlers, farriers, white smiths and general smiths; edge-tool makers and mechanics. It covers the two hundred year evolution of the smithies' shops and presents a portfolio of products of the general smith and the prices charged. Pennsylvania ironware is described through the materials and methods of handling, form and design elements. Biographies and work of over forty documented Pennsylvania smiths are included as well as a list of contemporary blacksmiths in the state.

Rural Delivery revisits life in small-town America through examining photographs that were made into postcards in the early twentieth century. The book features more than two hundred photo postcards that re-create a time when Union County Pennsylvania, was prosperous, progressive, and growing, like many other small towns of the era.
With so-called corresponding photographs at the height of their popularity, neighboring towns competed with one another to have their best "souvenir views" available. The images, made by professional and amateur photographers alike, include impressive bird's-eye views of towns and close-ups of their bustling streets. Area residents are shown on the move—in trains, buggies, and cars, as well as at play—at Bucknell (then College) class rushes, picnics in the Narrows, or ballooning expeditions in Allenwood. Catastrophic events and patriotic celebrations are also shown in these rare visual documents, which rivaled newspapers for their timeliness. Views of scenic spots, artfully composed or dramatically lighted, advertise the photographer's skill and the region's pastoral beauty.
Art historian Jody Blake relates the photographic correspondence to technical, social, and artistic developments in the history of photography, while material cultural historian Jeannette Lasansky places the images on the postcards in the local historical context of Union County.
Most of the photographs have not been reproduced since being issued. Extensive captions cover issues ranging from photographic techniques to historical background to rarity. Documentary materials, such as diagrams from photographic manuals and excerpts from local newspapers, are also included. Grover Bierly, Nelson Caulkins, Urs. H. Eisenhauer, Edwin S. Heiser, Stephen B. Horton, Arthur R. Ishiguro, Ellen H. Shields, John C. Slear, and John D. Swanger are among twenty-six photographers whose biographies are included.

High ridges and lush valleys teeming with natural resources abutted Union County’s river towns of Allenwood, White Deer, New Columbia, West Milton, and Winfield. Creeks emptying into the Susquehanna River connected gristmills and communities like Spring Garden to their river neighbors. Narrow-gauge railroad lines brought excursions from White Deer to Tea Springs and men and lumber to operations run by lumber barons. The Reading Railroad ran beside the Susquehanna, but other lines crossed it, establishing West Milton as a railroad hub. Central Oak Heights and Devitt’s Camp perched above West Milton, Allenwood, and Spring Garden, while groves and islands at the river’s edge were dotted with rustic camps. In the mid-20th century, a new Route 15 altered most of these towns’ streetscapes as World War II took the town of Alvira and area farmlands by eminent domain for explosives production. Through vintage photographs, Union County River Towns chronicles the rich history and evolution of this former frontier land.

Located in the heartland of Union County, New Berlin was considered a cultural, educational, and governmental center for craftsmen, farmers, and tradesmen. The county seat from 1813 to 1855, New Berlin was the gateway to the Buffalo Valley. Located in an area rich in natural resources, New Berlin is bounded by Penns Creek and Shamokin Mountain. The creek was a busy waterway that was used to transport goods, while Shamokin Mountain is known for being rich with iron ore and timber. New Berlin and the Buffalo Valley highlights what life was like in New Berlin and the surrounding communities of Dry Valley, White Springs, Vicksburg, Buffalo Crossroads, Mazeppa, Cowan, Red Bank, Rand, and Forest Hill, the latter a gateway to lush woodlands and clear streams.
