This book is a collection of essays that were published between 2003 and 2006. The author addresses why it is necessary to maintain that Christ is the universal saviour, even though this assertion may sound unintelligible, perhaps shocking, and even arrogant to some of our contemporaries. Ladaria nevertheless holds to the uniqueness of the person of Christ as being essential for the ultimate salvation of humankind, because salvation means to participate in the glory that Christ possesses in His humanity, offering us salvation as a free gift and revealing himself as paradigm of what humanity can fully be and become.

El pecado y la gracia son las dos coordenadas que definen la vida del hombre sobre la tierra. En efecto, ha sido desde el primer momento amado por Dios, ha sido invitado a participar de su vida. Pero a la vez, y desde el comienzo de la historia, ha sido infiel a la amistad que su Creador le ofrecía y ha querido determinar su vida sin referencia a Dios. Pablo ha explicado esta condición del hombre con su conocido paralelismo entre Adán y Cristo. Si a causa de Adán todos los hombres mueren, en Cristo todos son llamados a la vida. Pero este paralelismo siem-pre a favor de Jesús y de su gracia. Adán , el primer hombre, es figura del que debía venir. En Jesús, Dios Padre ha reconciliado el mundo consigo y nos ha llamado a la filiación divina. Esta invitación a la plenitud de la vida pide también la libre aceptación del hombre. En Cristo, plenamente obediente a la voluntad del Padre, se ha dado a la vez la manifestación plena del amor de Dios y la libre respuesta humana a esta iniciativa de salvación. En la fuerza de su Espíritu pueden los cristianos seguirle hasta entregar la vida por amor de Dios y de los hermanos.

Dos preocupaciones fundamentales están en la base de esta obra. En primer lugar, la de ofrecer una suficiente información positiva, sobre todo de los principales datos neotestamentarios y de la tradición y el magisterio de la Iglesia sobre el misterio de Dios uno y trino revelado en Cristo; pero también de las principales aportaciones sistemáticas sobre este tema, que han orientado en la historia la reflexión teológica o ejercen un influjo notable en la actualidad. En segundo lugar, la de articular este abundante material en una síntesis coherente que haga ver la relación intrínseca entre las diversas cuestiones estudiadas. El misterio de Dios es incomprensible para nuestra razón humana, pero ello no impide que la enseñanza que la Iglesia nos ofrece acerca de él sea profundamente armónica. Toda reflexión teológica deberá poner de relieve esta coherencia interna, de la que hablaba el concilio Vaticano 1. En todo caso el esfuerzo del creyente por dar razón de la esperanza (cf. 1 Pe 3,15) no puede jamás ser confundido con la pretensión de someterlo todo al imperio de nuestra razón. Esta obra, ahora profundamente remodelada, ansía contribuir a que se hagan realidad las palabras de Jesús: «Esta es la vida eterna: que te conozcan a ti, único Dios verdadero, y al que tú has enviado, Jesucristo» (Jn 17,3).
