Introduction from the Author To begin, Loyola Marymount University is not in Chicago, New Orleans, or Maryland. Never heard of it? It’s okay, neither had I when I first moved to Los Angeles two years ago. When I began exploring my college possibilities, my choices seemed obvious: USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, maybe Cal State Northridge, or even California Lutheran. However, during my search I stumbled across Loyola Marymount University. I checked the Web site, and it looked pretty, but I brushed it off and applied to the big name schools. Finally, on a whim, I applied to LMU on the last day after placing a frantic call to my high school guidance counselor to request my transcripts. Two days later, I received a letter of acceptance. When people asked where I applied, I immediately responded, “USC, Pepperdine, and this little Catholic school, Loyola Marymount.” I assumed that it was an unknown school, so I was shocked when even my relatives back east knew about LMU and its reputation as the “Ivy League of California.” LMU first won me over because of its appearance. I expected an urban school lodged firmly in the ghetto with concrete walls and graffiti. Instead, I saw the palm trees framing Sunken Garden and the bell tower that stands guard over all of the campus. The academics, the technology, and the students won me over later, and my last choice became my first choice. I wanted access to the film industry, but because I’m a small town girl at heart, I knew a giant university in the center of LA would intimidate me. LMU provides the access to LA when I need it and the escape from LA when I don’t. If you are exploring LMU, then you should know that the University is at a crossroads. The professors are emerging as nationally-recognized experts, and our students are making strides in film, law, and business. If the goal is to become the “Georgetown of the West,” then LMU is well on its way towards achieving this end. The University’s identity represents a unique merger of Jesuit and Marymount philosophies, and the emphasis on education and service permeates every aspect of life as a Lion.
