Let's Walk West presents recent work by Brad Kahlhamer, an Arizona-born, New York-based artist and musician. It includes large-scale watercolor-and-ink paintings, texts excerpted from his journals and song lyrics, working photographs, and preliminary studies, along with a selection of nineteenth-century Plains Indian ledger drawings selected by Kahlhamer from the collection of the Heard Museum in Phoenix.Let's Walk West looks at Kahlhamer's rambling journey into his Native American heritage and the landscape of the West. He was born in Tucson in 1956 of Native American parentage, but was adopted and raised in rural Wisconsin. His art is propelled by a quest to reconnect with his Native identity and to reconcile it with his middle-American upbringing. His paintings arm-wrestle with an unknown biography, with people and places both real and imagined, part visionary, part pop culture. Eagles, coyotes, and javelinas appear like talismans, alongside caricatures of family and friends.

Two generations after the exultation of Independence and the concurrent horrors of Partition, contemporary artists mine the uneasy history of photography in India as a means to challenge outmoded narratives, share hidden stories, and make personal connections with tradition. Taking history into their own hands, figures such as Nandan Ghiya, Gauri Gill, Jitish Kallat, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, Madhuban Mitra and Manas Bhattacharya, Pushpamala N., Raqs Media Collective, Vivan Sundaram, and Surekha draw on a diverse range of sources, from ethnographic photographs made at the height of the British occupation to hand-painted studio portraits and stills from Bollywood movies. Weighing the influence of the global against the draw of the local, these artists embrace tradition and innovation as covalent rather than competitive forces. Marking the US debut of several of the featured artists, Postdate: Photography and Inherited History in India deepens our understanding of the legacy of colonialism and celebrates new and socially engaged modes of image-making in South Asia. HairStories explores the history, style, and meaning of black hair as seen through the eyes of three generations of African American artists. Showcasing more than 60 works by 27 artists, it spans nearly a century of visual art, pop culture, music, and literature, considering hair as a reflection of history, identity, and race relations in America, from the days of segregation to today. Historical works by artist Jacob Lawrence andphotographer James VanDerZee provide a chronological introduction, followed by key works by internationally recognized contemporary artists such as David Hammons, Alison Saar, and Lorna Simpson, and recent works by pivotal emerging artists including Mark Bradford and Kori Newkirk. Essays consider the syndrome of "good hair" versus "bad hair;" the importance of the barbershop and beauty salon as a center of the African American community; the social and political symbolism of hairstyles; and hair as an expression of individuality.
