Rome, AD63. John Mark is recording Peter’s recollections of his time with Jesus, which will become the Gospel of Mark. Peter relives those days, and we see him struggle with who Jesus is and why he follows him. He deals with his inadequacies and his failings, and we see him become the man Jesus knew he could be. Jesus is the Man of Action, not Peter, always on the move, seemingly driven by his mission. We see the human side of Jesus. We see him laugh and we see him get angry. We see him joke. He is a real person. Peter, too, is not the stereotype we think of, but a deeper, more religious person. Various characters emerge. We discover people who are only in the background in the Gospels, but here they take on personalities and traits that sometimes remind us of ourselves.
