Kilmartin's emphasis is in the right place: since ""the one and only cure may never exist,"" far better to avoid trouble. She explains the causes and conventional treatment (and the many problems associated with it), then sets out her program--at the onset of symptoms, first aid which is ""patient-controlled, patient-worked, and patient-achieved."" Get a specimen to a lab, she counsels, then alleviate pain by frequent washing, drinking lots of water, taking Tylenol, and going to bed with a hot water bottle. This is firmly from an experienced patient's viewpoint--American doctors who recommend drinking cranberry juice obviously have never tried passing pure acid, says Kilmartin. Now and again the book takes on a curious tone (in a question and answer section, ""Can nuns get cystitis?""), and Kilmartin's attitudes on the uterus as a ""problem"" will anger many readers. But her self-care suggestions are valuable enough to ignore the rest.
