"Your husband is under arrest", the policeman said. "He is charged with stealing money from the United States Post Office." That's the way the day began as Dot Packer realized she was facing another crisis in her married life. This is not the first time Ed Packer had been in trouble. He had a roving eye and it focused on many women-women on whom he wanted to spend money-money he didn't have! This time the problem was more desperate. Money had been stolen from the federal government. There was no way to pay it back, no way to keep him out of jail. She works out an ingenious solution but the problems continue. The story told by Dot's daughter, Kate, who is struggling to find love and acceptance in her own life. A struggle in which she is constantly thwarted by her father. It is a story of life and of death, of greed and selfishness, of seances and visits from the grave. It begins in the depression era and reflects the economic needs that compounded families woes. The passage of time is not measured in years but in a series of tragedies and loves that seek a happy ending.
