<p>Kenneth L. Chafin was born Nobember 18, 1926, in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, and died January 3, 2001, in Houston, Texas.  His prominent career as a highly visible Baptist minister led him into the academic setting as a professor at Southern Baptist's two larges seminaries, denominational service  as a director of evangelism with the Home Mission Board, the pastorate of two influential inner-city churches, and international evangelism with the Billy Graham organization.  From 1957-1967, he tought evangelism and became the head of the evangelism department at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, where he held the Billy Graham Chair of Evangelism.  In 1969, he moved to the Home Mission Board as the Director  of evangelism for Southern Baptists. During  his long association with Billy Graham, he was named the Dean of the Billy Graham Schools of Evangelism, working with the Graham crusades around the world form 1967-1983.  From 1972 to 1984, he pastored South Main Baptsit Church in Houston, Texas, then retruned for a second time to Southern Seminary as professor of preaching, holding the Carl Bates Chair of Preaching, 1984 to 1987.  Called as pastor of Walnut Street Baptsit Chruch  in Louisville, he occupied that post from 1988 until his retirement in 1991.  Already the author of six books, in retirement he became a writer for Daily Guideposts and a poet.  His poetry is collected in a rhythm for my life.</p>
