Van Gogh to Picasso: The Berggruen Collection at the National Gallery (National Gallery London Publications)

The loan to The National Gallery by the collector Mr Heinz Berggruen of 69 works by six artists - Cezanne, Seurat, Braque, Miro, Van Gogh and Picasso - is celebrated by an exhibition and an accompanying catalogue. The Berggruen Collection is noted for its major works by key figures of the modern movement, including 41 works by Picasso representing most of the important phases in his career. It complements The National Gallery's collection of Post-impressionist paintings. After the last Impressionist exhibition in 1886, however, Degas's career has been shrouded in mystery. He exhibited sporadically and began to hoard his work in his studio. Claude Monet (1840–1926) is one of the best-known and most beloved painters in the history of art, with myriad publications and exhibitions devoted to his oeuvre.
