From what I can glean on the internet, Ahmad Kasravi was an important secular Iranian intellectual, a linguist and historian. This book was first published in 1946.

1916  Began instruction in Arabic at Memorial School and learned English 
1918  Joined the Democratic Party of Khiyabani for over a year 
1919  Entered the Ministry of Justice 
1929  Left the Ministry of Justice due to a verdict he gave in favor 
          of a group of peasants against Reza Shah; joined the Speranto 
          society and learned Speranto 
1933  Published the fundamentals of his beliefs in "A'in" 
1934  Begins the publication of a series of articles on Persian poetry 
1935  Appears before a Tehran University Committee and defends his stand on poetry; 
          is denied the rank of "professor" because of his refusal to renounce his stand on poetry; 
          left Tehran University due to his stand on academic freedom, 
          especially with regard to his view of the role of poetry in society 
1941  The Allied takeover of Iran provided opportunity for Kasravi and his group 
          to publish Parcham as well as cast a wider net to attracting more supporters to 
          their cause 
1945  An unsuccessful attempt was made on his life 
1946  Assassinated in Tehran

SECOND PRINTING,2019. Ahmad Kasravi (1890-1946) is one of the most prolific writers of 20th century Iran, with broad interests as a reformer and social thinker. He wrote on a variety of subjects, including history, geography, social criticism, literature and philology. In his works, Kasravi challenges convention and what he sees as decadent ideas, superstitions and various other ills of society. Nowhere are his controversial ideas more evident than in his writings on Islam in general, and Shi'ism in particular. This volume is the first translation of two of Kasravi's works, Dar Piramoun-e Islam (On Islam) and Shi'igari (Shi'ism). In the context of Shi'ism, Kasravi dared to directly attack the Shi'ite clergy, which angered religious groups and eventually led to his assassination by a group called the Fada'iyan-e Islam in 1946.

By the dawn of the twentieth century, Iran was sinking deeper into crisis. It was losing its economic and political independence to the Russian and British empires as a profligate absolute monarchy threw the country ever deeper into debt. A few intellectuals saw the rule of law as the solution to this, and eventually their ideas were taken up by a broad coalition of merchants, clerics, and artisans.
