Schmidt (1819-1864) was the last Young Hegelian and -- maybe-- the first existentialist. This book satirizes the science and philosophy of the German 1840s, particularly Max Stirner's "unique" egoist, replacing him with the non-egoistic, but undefinable, individual. Conservative theologian Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg's contemporary -- and hostile -- review is added as an appendix.
