For five decades, New York-based artist Jack Whitten (born 1939) has explored the possibilities of paint, the role of the artist and the allure of materials. As a child of the segregated South, he bears witness to expressions of evil and the resilience of the human spirit. From his first spectral canvases to his recent mosaic canvases, Whitten's compelling compositions have spanned a half-century of artistic innovation. Showcasing approximately 60 canvases, this survey--the first substantial volume on the artist--reveals Whitten as an innovator who uses abstraction in its newest idioms to achieve an enduring gravitas. Whitten's abiding engagement with scientific systems (as structure), social issues (as evidence) and commitment to the power of visual expression (materiality) show him to be an artist both of his time and for the present.

Since its founding in 1993 by the late Pace Foods heiress Linda Pace, Artpace has become one of the premiere foundations for contemporary art. An artist residency program based in San Antonio, Texas, Artpace's goal is to give artists time and space to imagine new ways to work. Each year, nine artists (three from Texas, three from other areas of the United States, and three from abroad) are invited to the foundation to create new work. Selected by guest curators like Robert Storr and Okwui Enwezor, the artists who have undertaken residencies is impressive, prescient, and diverse, including Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Annette Messager, Tracey Moffatt, Xu Bing, Nancy Rubins, Cornelia Parker, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Glenn Ligon, Kendell Geers, Carolee Schneemann, Mona Hatoum, Isaac Julien, Arturo Herrera, and Christian Jankowski. Dreaming Red includes images of all the works created at Artpace since its inception; an essay by art historian Eleanor Heartney; short essays on selected artists by guest curators, including Cuauhtémoc Medina, Lynne Cooke, Chrissie Iles, and Judith Russi Kirshner; and a lengthy essay on the personal history of the foundation and its founder.

'As Marcel Duchamp said, 'the creation of art restlessly oscillates between two poles: the artist and the spectator',' writes Donald Kuspit in his insightful essay, 'Chihuly and Stroemple: A Meeting of Imaginations'. He suggests that 'the collector is the ideal spectator.' For Dale Chihuly, George R. Stroemple, may be the ultimate 'ideal spectator' as he possesses more works by Chihuly than any other collector, concentrating on three series only -- the Irish Cylinders, Macchia, Venetians -- and Drawings. In 1997 the Portland Art Museum presented 350 works selected from this collection. In the catalogue accompanying the exhibition Kuspit explores the relationship of artist and collector, noting that 'this exhibition is not only about Dale Chihuly's glass art, but also about George R Stroemple's enthusiastic, if selective collecting of it.' Curator Kathryn Kanjo addresses the creation of these three distinctly different series in her incisive essay, 'Chihuly: Glass Without Limits'. Statements by the collector and his curator, Tracy Savage, who had run Chihuly's Seattle studio at the time of Stroemple's first purchases in 1990, offer intimate insights to this relationship of collector and artist.
